What is the best history of western music textbook?
I am looking for a good overview of the history of western classical music to read for fun (but I enjoy reading college textbooks). I would like something that has an accompanying Cd so that I can listen to what I am reading about. Thank you!
If you like college textbooks and are looking for the definitive version (with an accompanying CD) then go for the Norton Anthology of Western Music. It lies somewhere between beginner and advanced so you will want to know the fundamentals of music if you go for this one. I believe there is not a chapter introducing any sorts of musical concepts (ie: this is a clef, this is a staff, this is a note).
