Learning on a 12 string Guitar over a 6 string guitar?

I have a 12 string guitar. I was told I could just put six strings and leave out the octave strings to make it a 6-string guitar. Is it just as easy to learn with 12 strings?

I started playing when I was 10 on a cheap six string. About 6 months later I got a 12 string for Christmas. It was very cool, but very difficult to play on at first. I admit that I took the octave strings off and played it as a normal 6 string for about 6 months. When I did put the octave strings back on I still had a heck of a time at first getting used to it, but I quickly learned and adapted to it.
I suggest learning on a six string (or taking off the octaves) for your first year just to develop your basic skills and coordination.
